Police in Nambale, Busia County, have launched a fresh manhunt for a Ugandan herbalist accused of defrauding over 10 unsuspecting locals out of more than KSh1.7 million in under three weeks, using the stolen identity of a popular Kenyan MCA.
The suspect, identified as Kiisa Hakim, is said to have masqueraded as Dr. Paul Okello Odhiambo, the current Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Amukura Central in Teso South Constituency, by using photos and old YouTube videos from Okello’s previous life as a renowned herbalist.
According to police reports, the suspect initially gained the trust of locals through social media, using fake testimonials and the public profile of Dr. Okello, also known by his herbalist alias “Mula Nyasi“. Victims paid large sums of money in hopes of receiving magical healing or fortune remedies.
“It is shocking to learn that the Ugandan went on my YouTube account, downloaded my photos and videos from my herbalist days, and used them to create a fake account to con people,” said Dr. Paul Okello, the real MCA, while speaking to local media.
The fraudster, who is reportedly from Mbale in eastern Uganda, was previously arrested and released on police bail of KSh15,000, but has since disappeared. He allegedly threatened victims with a “magic snake” should they report him to authorities, further adding to the fear and mystery surrounding the case.
Victims have now lodged formal complaints at various police stations in Busia, prompting renewed investigations by the Kenya Police Service. Authorities are appealing for information from the public that could lead to the suspect’s arrest.
