Nairobi, Kenya – Wednesday, August 20, 2025 – Ride-hailing giant Bolt has announced the rollout of dashboard cameras in vehicles across Kenya to record both the inside and outside of cars during trips. The move is aimed at strengthening accountability, enhancing safety, and resolving disputes between drivers and passengers.

According to Bolt, the recordings will be accessible to its customer service team, who will use them to settle conflicts between riders and drivers. Beyond dispute resolution, the footage will also serve as evidence in police investigations and insurance claims, providing drivers with an additional layer of protection.

While installation of the cameras is optional, the company is actively encouraging drivers to adopt the technology.

Data Protection Compliance

Bolt emphasized that all drivers using dashboard cameras must comply with Kenya’s Data Protection Act. This includes:

  • Informing passengers that recording is taking place.
  • Explaining the purpose of the recording.
  • Stating how long the footage will be stored.

The rollout comes amid increasing complaints of misconduct by some Bolt drivers, including overcharging, harassment, and extortion, issues that the company hopes the cameras will help address.
