NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenyan athletes could soon receive a KSh1 million reward for every goal, win, or point earned in international competitions if the Sports (Amendment) Bill 2025 sponsored by Belgut MP Nelson Koech passes in Parliament.
The proposal aims to institutionalize performance-based incentives for sportsmen and women representing Kenya on the global stage. The move comes after President William Ruto famously pledged a KSh1 million reward for each win by the Harambee Stars during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), a promise credited with boosting team morale and national pride.
Key Provisions of the Bill
Under the proposed Section 55A of the Sports Act:
- The Cabinet Secretary for Sports, in consultation with the Sports Fund, would pay KSh1 million for every goal scored, point earned, or equivalent scoring unit achieved in an international sporting event — regardless of whether the result leads to a win.
- An additional KSh1 million reward would be given for each win at such events.
- Eligible events include competitions sanctioned by recognized international sports federations where Kenya is officially represented.
- All payments must be disbursed within 30 days of the event’s official conclusion.
Funding and Implementation
The incentives will be financed through the Sports Fund established under Section 12 of the Sports Act. The Bill also empowers the Cabinet Secretary, with Parliament’s approval, to make regulations for effective implementation, covering:
- Procedures for verifying performance
- List of eligible sports disciplines
- Payment modalities
- Dispute resolution mechanisms
Why It Matters
Koech argued that formalizing such rewards will motivate athletes, boost performance, and elevate Kenya’s profile in global sports.
“The CHAN reward promise had a significant motivational effect that united the country behind our players. This Bill will ensure all our sportsmen and women benefit from similar incentives,” Koech stated.
If passed, the law would apply across sports — from football and rugby to athletics and volleyball — offering Kenya’s top athletes the chance to earn millions while flying the national flag high.
