Former Nairobi Senatorial aspirant Gabriel Bukachi Chapia has been convicted for forging academic certificates and fraudulently acquiring public funds, in a case spearheaded by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
Chapia was found guilty on his own plea of guilt after entering a plea bargain agreement with the prosecution. This comes after a failed attempt in 2024 by prosecutors to withdraw the charges.
The ruling was delivered by Magistrate Charles Ondieki at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Law Courts on Friday, September 19, 2025.
He pleaded guilty to:
- Three counts of forgery of academic certificates, contrary to sections 345 and 349 of the Penal Code.
- Two counts of fraudulent acquisition of public property, contrary to section 45(1)(a) as read with section 48 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.
The conviction marks a major victory for the EACC, which has intensified efforts to curb fraud and corruption in public institutions.
Chapia now awaits sentencing, with the court expected to issue penalties in line with Kenya’s anti-corruption laws.
