NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 24 – Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka has dismissed speculation that he could once again play second fiddle in the 2027 presidential election. Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, the former vice president made it clear that he will not accept the role of a running mate.
Kalonzo said narratives suggesting he might join Kenya Kwanza or support another candidate were part of a calculated misinformation campaign. He stressed that his political focus is firmly on leading Kenya, not backing someone else.
“Too Late for Games”
“I don’t think I would be a running mate in 2027. Some of my supporters, a majority of them, know that. That is why this administration is vexed with the dream that Kalonzo Musyoka will join Kenya Kwanza. Bloggers are on a full-scale mandate to make it happen, but I tell them, ‘Please stop wasting your time.’ It is too late for any games to be played against me,” he said.
His words mark a firm shift in his political posture after years of criticism for repeatedly settling for the deputy position. Having served as a running mate in 2007, 2013, and 2017, Kalonzo now insists it is time to go for the top seat.
A Political Journey of Sacrifice
The Wiper leader underlined that his career has been built on sacrifice. However, this time he believes Kenya needs “a higher idea” to restore hope and stability.
“In my entire personality, I have sacrificed, but I can’t sacrifice enough for this country. We have a higher idea of getting this nation back to its feet. If that be the case, I pray to God my colleagues will see it,” Kalonzo said.
His remarks suggest a hardening stance as opposition leaders position themselves for the 2027 general election. Analysts argue his firm declaration could reshape coalition talks and succession strategies, especially within the United Opposition.
Opposition Line-Up for 2027
In the opposition, several figures are already positioning themselves as presidential hopefuls. They include former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) leader Eugine Wamalwa.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto, who recently struck global deals such as the California–Africa Climate and Economic Partnership, is preparing to defend his seat. With shifting alliances and growing public discontent, 2027 is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable elections in Kenya’s history.
