A 55-year-old man, identified as Mumo Nthiwa, has been arraigned in a Machakos court after police recovered items linked to witchcraft, including human hair, skin, nails, photographs of residents, and charms.

Linked to Ongoing Murder Investigation

Nthiwa’s arrest stemmed from investigations into the murder of Easther Katongo in Kathiani, Machakos County.

According to Machakos County Police Commander Patrick Singi, officers first encountered Erick Makau in Mbee, Kathiani, allegedly performing rituals near a water tank. Upon interrogation, Makau admitted he had been instructed to carry half a kilogram of tobacco to poison drinking water and later named Nthiwa as his supplier.

“We were investigating the murder of Easther Katongo when we came across a man involved in witchcraft. That led us to Nthiwa, who was found with charms, photos, and disturbing articles,” said Singi.

Disturbing Discovery During Police Raid

Police raided Nthiwa’s premises and discovered a room filled with witchcraft paraphernalia, including:

  • Human remains (hair, skin, nails)

  • Cult-like charms and talismans

  • Photographs of residents allegedly used in rituals

Shockingly, Nthiwa also confessed to being a preacher, admitting that he used fear and superstition to extort money from unsuspecting members of the public.

Charges in Court

Nthiwa was charged under Section 5 of the Witchcraft Act No. 23, Cap 67, which prohibits possession of charms or articles used in witchcraft, sorcery, or enchantment intended to cause fear, annoyance, or harm.

The court has since ordered the destruction of all items recovered from his shrine.

Meanwhile, Makau was cleared of wrongdoing and released after being found innocent.

Police Warning to the Public

Commander Singi urged residents of Machakos and beyond to remain vigilant against individuals exploiting spiritual beliefs:

“We caution members of the public to avoid falling prey to conmen who use witchcraft to extort money.”

Authorities are continuing investigations to determine whether Nthiwa had a direct role in the murder case.
