A family in Gituamba village, Kiambu, is mourning the tragic death of Stephen Mathia Njoroge, who was fatally stabbed by his cousin following a heated argument during the Manchester United vs Chelsea football match.
According to witnesses, the dispute erupted shortly after Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea. What began as a football debate quickly escalated into violence.
The suspect, identified as James Mbugua, allegedly stabbed Njoroge in the stomach, leaving him critically injured. Njoroge was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Relatives described both men as close and peaceful, expressing shock over the incident. They also suggested that alcohol consumption may have contributed to the fatal altercation.
Police confirmed that Mbugua fled the scene immediately after the attack but was later arrested. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
This tragic case adds to the growing list of disputes in Kenya linked to alcohol abuse and football rivalry, raising concerns among community leaders about the need for awareness and conflict resolution measures.
