The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has announced the suspension of all football league matches across the country following the government’s declaration of a national mourning period in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.
In an official statement issued on Wednesday, October 15, FKF said it would respect the government directive and halt all ongoing football activities until the mourning period concludes.
“Following the Government’s declaration of seven days of National Mourning in honour of the late former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has suspended all league fixtures scheduled during this period,” the federation said.
FKF further expressed its condolences to the Odinga family and the entire nation, describing Raila as a great leader and a passionate supporter of Kenyan football.
“We join the nation in mourning a visionary statesman and lifelong supporter of local football. May his soul rest in peace,” the statement concluded.
Football Calendar Adjustments Expected
The suspension affects ongoing FKF Premier League, National Super League, and Division One matches that had been scheduled for the week.
According to FKF officials, new match dates will be announced after consultations with clubs and league partners.
Raila Odinga, who died on Wednesday, October 15, in India while receiving treatment, was an avid football enthusiast and a supporter of community sports initiatives.
The government earlier declared Friday, October 17, a public holiday, and announced that the former Prime Minister will receive a full State Funeral on Sunday, October 19, at his home in Bondo, Siaya County.
