The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has officially appointed Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga as the Acting Party Leader, following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a statement issued on Thursday morning, ODM announced that the decision was reached unanimously during a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC).
“The National Executive Committee (NEC) has this morning met and unanimously endorsed the designation of the Senator of Siaya County, Dr. Oburu Oginga, as the Acting Party Leader. This appointment takes effect immediately,” read part of the ODM statement shared on the party’s official social media platforms.
ODM Transition Begins After Raila Odinga’s Death
Dr. Oburu Oginga, the elder brother of the late Raila Odinga, assumes leadership at a pivotal moment for the party as it begins the process of transition and restructuring.
The NEC’s move marks the first major internal decision by ODM since the loss of its founding leader, whose four-decade-long political career shaped Kenya’s democracy and opposition politics.
Party officials indicated that Dr. Oburu’s temporary leadership will ensure continuity and stability within ODM as it prepares for upcoming consultative meetings and strategic planning sessions.
“Dr. Oburu’s appointment ensures the ODM party remains united and continues advancing Raila Odinga’s political legacy,” an NEC member told Sauce.co.ke.
A Legacy of Leadership and Reform
Founded in 2005, ODM has been one of Kenya’s most influential political movements, championing reform, democracy, and social justice. Under Raila Odinga’s leadership, the party played a central role in several national transformations, including the 2007 constitutional reform movement and the 2010 Constitution of Kenya.
With Dr. Oburu Oginga at the helm, the party is expected to honour Raila’s legacy while charting a new path for Kenya’s opposition politics.
