Nairobi, Kenya – October 8, 2025 — At least 30 passengers were injured on Tuesday evening after a bus they were traveling in overturned and plunged into a river at Waruku, along Musa Gitau Road in Nairobi.
Witnesses reported that the bus lost control before veering off the road and overturning into the river, causing panic among residents and motorists. Emergency services responded swiftly, rushing the injured to nearby hospitals.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Confirming the incident, Nairobi County Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria said rescue operations were ongoing as authorities worked to evacuate trapped passengers.
“A bus has plunged into a river at Waruku, off Waiyaki Way, leaving over 30 people injured. Rescue operations are ongoing — more than 20 victims have been taken to Riverside Medical Center, while others are still being evacuated. More ambulances are urgently needed,” Mosiria said.
Calls for Emergency Assistance
Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai urged humanitarian organizations, including the Kenya Red Cross Society and St. John Ambulance, to assist in the ongoing rescue efforts.
Police officers have since secured the area and launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident, which occurred during evening rush hour as heavy rains pounded parts of Nairobi.
Road Safety Concerns
The Waruku accident adds to the growing number of road crashes in Nairobi in recent weeks. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, especially during rainy weather when roads become slippery and visibility is reduced.
