Flamboyant Kenyan businessman and former Youth Enterprise Development Fund chairman Gor Semelang’o has reportedly been jailed in Dubai following a shareholder dispute involving a Kenyan woman over ownership of a club business.
The news was confirmed by lawyer Donald Kipkorir, a close associate of Semelang’o, who described the matter as a civil disagreement that escalated into a criminal case under UAE law.
Lawyer Kipkorir Appeals for Diplomatic Intervention
In a public statement, lawyer Donald Kipkorir said the dispute should have been handled as a civil issue, but that the woman involved had “taken advantage of Dubai’s strict laws” to have Semelang’o detained.
“Gor Semelang’o is a good man with a big heart. I have asked our good Foreign Affairs PS Korir Sing’Oei to use our diplomatic relations with the UAE to amicably resolve the issue,” Kipkorir said.
The flamboyant businessman, who is well-known in Kenya’s entertainment and business circles, has often been associated with philanthropic activities and youth empowerment initiatives.
Kenyan Authorities Urged to Step In
Kipkorir appealed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intervene through diplomatic channels to ensure the matter is resolved fairly and that Semelang’o’s rights are protected while in custody.
The Kenyan embassy in the United Arab Emirates is yet to issue an official statement on the case.
