Motorists will pay KSh8 per kilometre to use the 174.9-kilometre Rironi–Mau Summit Expressway once the multibillion-shilling project is completed, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced.

The dual carriageway toll road, estimated to cost between KSh180 billion and KSh195 billion, will be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement and is expected to kick off before January 2026.

KeNHA said the project will take about two years to complete, with the first operational year set for 2028.

CRBC and NSSF to Manage the Expressway

According to KeNHA, the expressway will be jointly undertaken and managed by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

The partnership aims to enhance the country’s road infrastructure while allowing private investors to recoup their costs through toll fees.

“This project represents a milestone in Kenya’s infrastructure growth and will significantly ease congestion along one of the country’s busiest transport corridors,” KeNHA said in a statement.

Eight Toll Stations and Modern Features

The Rironi–Mau Summit Expressway will feature eight toll stations operating under an open tolling system, where motorists pay based on the distance travelled.

Other features include:

  • 15 interchanges
  • 8 footbridges
  • 25 kilometres of service lanes
  • 8 wildlife crossings
  • 41 U-turns
  • 41 underpasses
  • 118 bus bays

The base KSh8 rate will apply to passenger cars and four-wheel-drive vehicles, with different rates expected for heavy and commercial vehicles.

Project to Ease Congestion on Key Corridor

The Rironi–Mau Summit stretch, which connects Nairobi to Nakuru and Eldoret, is one of Kenya’s most vital transport arteries for trade and travel.

Once complete, the expressway is expected to drastically reduce travel time, improve road safety, and boost economic connectivity across the Rift Valley and Western Kenya regions.

The project also aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 infrastructure goals and supports the government’s agenda for improved transport efficiency.
