Police in Matungulu, Machakos County have recovered a firearm that was stolen from Kinyui Police Station two months ago, bringing relief to local residents after weeks of insecurity concerns.
The recovery comes just a day after Machakos County Commissioner Josephine Ouko vowed that security agencies would pursue the suspect and recover the missing weapon.
Confirming the incident, Matungulu Deputy County Commissioner Evelyn Wekesa said the firearm was discovered on Tuesday evening, abandoned in the Katine area.
“The weapon was recovered but was missing the butt stock and the magazine. Our teams are following up to establish whether the missing parts can also be recovered,” said Wekesa.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to track down the suspect, who remains at large.
The discovery follows reports of rising insecurity in parts of Matungulu, which police believe may have been linked to the stolen firearm. Residents had earlier expressed fear that the missing gun posed a serious safety threat to the community.
“We are working round the clock to restore full security and bring the suspect to justice,” Wekesa added.
Police have since intensified patrols in the area and appealed to locals to share any information that could help in the ongoing investigations.
