The High Court in Bomet has sentenced a man to 40 years in prison for the murder of his wife in Seanin village in 2020.
According to court records, Robert Kipkorir Tonui locked his wife, Emmy Chepkoech Mitei, inside their house on October 3, 2020, poured petrol around it, and set it ablaze.
Neighbours managed to rescue Chepkoech from the burning house, but she sustained 90% burns. She was rushed to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries four days later.
In a statement, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) confirmed that the court found Tonui guilty of murder, ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
“He was convicted and sentenced to 40 years’ imprisonment, a penalty the Court noted reflects the seriousness of gender-based violence and serves as a deterrent to similar offences,” the ODPP said.
