The Vatican has formally ruled that the Virgin Mary should not be referred to as “Co-redemptrix”, saying the title risks creating theological confusion by suggesting she shares in Christ’s saving power.
Instead, the Church teaches that Mary should be honoured as the “Mother of the Faithful,” a title that affirms her vital yet subordinate role in salvation history.
New Vatican Document Clarifies Marian Titles
The declaration is contained in a new document released Tuesday by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, titled Mater populi fidelis (“The Mother of the Faithful People”).
“It would not be appropriate to use the title ‘Co-redemptrix’ to define Mary’s cooperation,” the Note states.
“This title risks obscuring Christ’s unique salvific mediation and can therefore create confusion and imbalance in the harmony of the truths of the Christian faith.”
The Note, approved by Pope Leo XIV and signed by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández and Monsignor Armando Matteo, emphasizes that while Mary’s role in salvation is deeply respected, Jesus Christ remains the sole Redeemer.
‘Mediatrix’ Allowed, With Caution
The Vatican said the term “Mediatrix” may still be used in reference to Mary’s intercessory role, but only if it clearly shows that Christ remains the one true Mediator between God and humanity.
The document stresses that all devotion to Mary must lead believers closer to Christ, not away from Him.
Historical Background
The term “Co-redemptrix” has long been a subject of theological debate.
While some Popes and theologians have used it informally to express Mary’s cooperation in salvation, the Church has never defined it as official doctrine.
The Second Vatican Council deliberately avoided the term to preserve unity and prevent misunderstandings.
In 1996, then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI) warned against making “Co-redemptrix” a dogma, saying the term was “unclear, not biblical, and could distort the faith.”
He explained that everything Mary is flows from Christ, and calling her “Co-redemptrix” could mistakenly imply equality with Him.
Mary’s Role: Always Pointing to Christ
The Vatican reiterates that Mary’s faith, obedience, and intercession remain central to Christian devotion, but her role is always supportive and never equal to Christ’s saving mission.
“Everything about Mary points to Christ,” the Note concludes, “and every authentic devotion to her leads the faithful closer to Him.”
