Detectives in Nyali Sub-county have arrested a man accused of running an online accommodation scam that left a Nairobi family stranded during a planned vacation in Mombasa.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect allegedly targeted travellers searching for holiday apartments through social media and rental platforms.

Sh24,000 Holiday Payment Vanishes

The victim told police that on December 1, 2025, they came across an apartment listed online as “Brima Mangu Apartment 2B.” The suspect, identifying himself as Brian Masika, claimed to be the owner and engaged the victim in negotiations.

They reportedly agreed on a nightly rate of Sh6,000, after which the victim sent Sh24,000 for four nights to a mobile money till number provided by the suspect.

However, when the Nairobi family arrived in Mombasa three days later, the suspect had switched off his phone and cut all communication — leaving them stranded with no accommodation.

Forensic Trail Leads Detectives to the Suspect

The frustrated family reported the matter to authorities, prompting DCI officers to initiate a manhunt.

Following what the agency described as forensic leads, detectives traced the suspect to his hideout and arrested him. He is currently in custody and will be arraigned in court.

DCI Warns Holiday Travellers to Stay Vigilant

With the festive season approaching — a period notorious for increased travel and online bookings — the DCI has cautioned Kenyans against falling prey to fraudulent accommodation listings.

“Not every enticing offer is legitimate. Stay cautious to avoid falling victim to scams,” the agency warned.
