Bomet, Kenya — February 10, 2026: Police in Bomet County have arrested a clinical officer attached to Chemaner Health Centre over allegations that he sexually assaulted a pregnant woman during a routine medical visit, in a case that has sparked outrage and renewed scrutiny of patient safety in public health facilities.
The suspect, identified as Eric Langat, also known as Kirinyet, was taken into custody following the incident, according to Bomet East Sub-County Police Commander Michael Singa.
Victim’s Screams Alerted Staff and Patients
According to a police report, the alleged assault occurred inside one of the consultation rooms as the officer attended to the patient. However, the situation escalated when the woman reportedly screamed for help, drawing the attention of other patients and hospital staff.
Witnesses allegedly found the suspect in a compromising position with the victim. As more people gathered to establish what was happening, the clinical officer reportedly fled the scene, prompting an immediate police response.
Suspect Arrested After Manhunt
Following a report filed at Chemaner Police Station, officers launched a manhunt and later arrested the suspect at his hideout.
Meanwhile, police officers and medical staff facilitated the victim’s transfer to Longisa County Referral Hospital, where she underwent a medical examination and received psychosocial counselling.
Claims of Previous Unreported Incidents
A source familiar with the investigation alleged that the suspect may have been linked to two previous rape cases that were never officially reported. The source claimed the incidents were allegedly suppressed due to the suspect’s close connections with senior medical administrators, an allegation that authorities say will form part of ongoing inquiries.
Court Appearance Pending
Commander Singa confirmed that the suspect remains in custody and will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
Authorities have urged patients and health workers to report all cases of abuse immediately, emphasizing that medical facilities must remain safe spaces for all patients, especially vulnerable groups such as expectant mothers.
