The United Opposition has officially announced that Nyali MP Mohammed Ali will be its candidate for the Mombasa governorship race in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a roadside rally in Roysambu on Sunday, Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), revealed that the opposition faction had settled on MP Ali as its preferred candidate.
Gachagua stated that consultations are ongoing to determine which political party ticket Ali will use in the highly anticipated Mombasa governor race.
“As United Opposition, we want to have our candidate for Mombasa governorship. Kalonzo Musyoka, myself and other leaders will discuss the party which our candidate will use,” Gachagua said.
Mohammed Ali Accepts Endorsement
Accepting the endorsement, MP Ali confirmed he is ready to contest for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat, pledging to eliminate cartels and restore accountability in the county government.
“We have agreed that I ensure that I deal with all cartels and I bring the vote home and we move together,” he said.
Ali also framed his candidacy as a youth-driven movement, declaring that the time has come for young leaders to rise.
“The time for the youth to stand up is here. We have leaders who will lead us with wisdom. All those spreading propaganda should know that Gachagua and Kalonzo have agreed that I be the lion to roar in Mombasa,” he added.
Fallout with UDA Leadership
The Nyali legislator recently parted ways with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), accusing the party of intolerance and attempts to frustrate his 2027 gubernatorial ambitions.
He has publicly clashed with UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar, who is also positioning himself for the Mombasa governorship. Ali has accused Omar of sidelining independent-minded leaders and fostering factional politics within the party.
Mombasa 2027 Political Battle Takes Shape
With the United Opposition’s endorsement now public, the Mombasa 2027 governor race is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched contests in the next General Election. Political realignments and party negotiations are expected to intensify in the coming months.
