Controversial youth figure Calvince Okoth, popularly known as Gaucho, has claimed that the late Raila Odinga played a key role in paving the way for his appointment to a Nairobi hospital board.
Claims of Political Backing
Speaking during a televised interview, Gaucho alleged that Odinga had personally indicated he would engage Johnson Sakaja to help secure him a position.
According to Gaucho, the idea of his appointment had been floated long before it was officially confirmed.
Initial Doubts Over Appointment
He said he initially dismissed the reports as speculation, noting that the story had circulated for over a year without any formal confirmation.
It was only after the official gazette notice was released that he became certain and publicly acknowledged the appointment to the board of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.
Public Debate Intensifies
Gaucho’s appointment has sparked widespread debate, with critics questioning his suitability for the role—particularly citing his lack of formal education and absence from recent youth-led protests.
Response to Critics
In response, Gaucho dismissed the criticism, arguing that his role on the board is not technical but representative of grassroots voices.
He maintains that his appointment is meant to give a platform to ordinary citizens, especially young people from informal settlements, in decision-making processes.
