The Narok County Government has dismissed allegations that tourists were detained at Muthu Keekorok Lodge, terming the claims as false and misleading.
County Refutes Allegations
In a statement issued on April 24, Narok County rejected assertions by MGM Muthu Hotels that guests were being unlawfully held at the lodge or that management had been denied access.
“The County Government of Narok categorically denies the false, inaccurate, and alarmist claims,” the statement read in part.
Labour Dispute Behind Disruptions
According to the county, the situation at the lodge is linked to a prolonged labour dispute between the hotel management and its employees, which resulted in a strike.
Officials cited grievances including alleged staff harassment, poor working conditions, mismanagement, and low staff morale as the root cause of the unrest.
Tourists Safe and Free to Move
Narok County emphasized that there is no security threat to tourists within the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
It assured that all guests remain safe and are free to enter and exit the lodge without restriction.
Security Measures in Place
The county further noted that visitors are under the protection of county rangers working alongside the Tourism Police Unit to ensure their safety during the ongoing strike.
Advisory to Management
Authorities acknowledged that the strike could disrupt normal operations and advised the hotel management to arrange alternative accommodation for affected guests if necessary.
Hotel’s Claims
Earlier, MGM Muthu Hotels alleged that tourists had been blocked from leaving the premises and accused county authorities of interfering with its operations despite holding a long-term lease.
The company also called on the national government to intervene, raising concerns about investor protection and guest safety.
Ongoing Standoff
The conflicting statements highlight a growing standoff between the county government and the hotel operator, even as assurances are issued that tourists remain safe and unaffected.
The situation continues to draw attention within Kenya’s tourism sector, a key pillar of the country’s economy.
