Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested popular Luo content creator David Onyango over a series of social media posts allegedly targeting members of the Kikuyu community following the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls’ Academy.
According to investigators, the suspect, widely known online as MC Adek Tatu, allegedly published insensitive and inflammatory content on his Facebook account in the aftermath of the dormitory fire that claimed the lives of 16 students.
Authorities say the posts sparked public outrage before they were later deleted. Following criticism, the content creator reportedly claimed that his Facebook account had been hacked.
The DCI stated that detectives launched investigations and tracked the suspect using intelligence-led operations.
The manhunt eventually led officers to Queen’s Court in Utange, Mombasa, where he was arrested at his residence.
Police say Onyango is currently in custody undergoing processing as preparations are made for his arraignment in court.
The arrest comes as authorities continue to warn Kenyans against using social media platforms to spread hate speech, ethnic incitement, misinformation, or content that could inflame tensions, especially during periods of national mourning and tragedy.
The Utumishi Girls Academy fire remains one of the country’s deadliest school disasters in recent years, with investigations into the cause of the inferno and possible criminal responsibility still ongoing.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific charges that the suspect is expected to face once presented before court.
