Veteran Kenyan actor and scriptwriter Mzee Zoa, once a familiar face in the country’s golden era of television drama, is reportedly living on the streets of Nairobi after years of financial struggles following his exit from the entertainment industry.
The former thespian, who also contributed as a writer to several iconic local productions, is said to have spent the last two years without a permanent home, surviving around the busy Coast Bus stage in Nairobi.
Mzee Zoa is widely remembered for his work in some of Kenya’s most popular television shows, including Vitimbi, Vioja Mahakamani, Vituko, Tausi, Chini ya Mnazi, Popo, Asili na Asilia, Zingatia and Tushauriane.
According to reports, the veteran actor now sleeps on a worn-out mattress and relies on well-wishers as he struggles to make ends meet.
Life Changed After Fame Faded
Speaking about his situation, Mzee Zoa said his challenges began after his acting career slowed down and opportunities in the television industry became scarce.
He also revealed that the breakdown of his marriage worsened his circumstances, claiming his wife left him after financial difficulties emerged.
“We didn’t get government support after we stopped acting on TV,” he reportedly said.
The veteran actor further disclosed that he has continued writing scripts and attempting to remain active in the creative sector, but many of his proposals have allegedly been rejected by media houses.
Concerns Over Welfare of Veteran Actors
Mzee Zoa’s situation has sparked renewed debate about the welfare of veteran artists in Kenya, with many questioning whether enough support exists for performers who helped shape the country’s entertainment industry.
His story highlights the financial difficulties faced by some former actors after leaving the spotlight, despite their contribution to popular programmes that entertained generations of Kenyans.
As news of his plight spreads, many Kenyans have expressed sympathy and called for support from government agencies, industry stakeholders and well-wishers to help improve his living conditions and restore dignity to one of the country’s veteran entertainers.
