Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has appointed John Methu as the secretary general designate of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Appointment Announced in Nairobi
Gachagua announced the appointment on Monday during a press conference held at the party headquarters in Nairobi.
The Nyandarua Senator will replace Hezron Obaga in the role.
According to Gachagua, Methu will immediately begin serving as the party spokesperson and secretary general designate pending formal registration by the Registrar of Political Parties.
“Senator John Methu, for all practical purposes, is a member of DCP, and he will start acting from today as the secretary general designate and be the spokesman of the DCP party on all matters starting today,” Gachagua said.
Awaiting Formal Registration
The former Deputy President noted that Methu’s name would later be submitted to the Registrar of Political Parties for official registration as the party’s substantive Secretary General.
“In due course, in the fullness of time, his name will be forwarded to the Registrar of Political Parties so that he is registered as a duly appointed Secretary General of DCP,” he added.
First Assignment: Ol Kalou By-Election
Gachagua also revealed that the party’s National Executive Council had already assigned Methu his first major responsibility — overseeing DCP’s campaign strategy for the upcoming Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election scheduled for July 16.
“The National Executive Council has given Senator John Methu, the secretary general designate, his first assignment: that he, together with other leaders, take charge of the by-elections in Ol Kalou and deliver a decisive victory to the DCP party,” Gachagua stated.
DCP Eyes Expansion Ahead of 2027
Gachagua expressed confidence in the growth of the party, saying thousands of aspirants had already shown interest in contesting various elective seats under the DCP ticket ahead of the next General Election.
The developments come as political realignments continue to shape Kenya’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
