The Postal Corporation of Kenya (Posta) is set to shut down 125 post offices across the country as part of a major restructuring programme aimed at cutting operational costs and improving profitability.
Posta Branch Network to Reduce From 625 to 500
According to the corporation, the closures will reduce its branch network from 625 offices to 500.
Nearly half of the targeted branches have already been shut down, while the remaining outlets are expected to close by the end of June 2026.
Posta says approximately 300 branches are commercially unviable and collectively cost the corporation close to KSh1.012 billion annually.
Workforce Reduction Underway
As part of the restructuring process, Posta is also reducing its workforce from 1,990 employees to 1,530.
Postmaster-General and CEO John Tanui said the changes are intended to help the corporation redirect resources toward modern services and digital operations.
Focus Shifts to E-Commerce and Courier Services
According to Posta management, the corporation plans to strengthen areas such as courier services, e-commerce logistics, payments, and digital addressing systems.
Some of the affected branches will reportedly be converted into fulfilment hubs to support e-commerce activities instead of being abandoned entirely.
Nairobi Branches Affected
In Nairobi, branches located at Village Market, Enterprise Road, and Jamia are among those expected to be affected by the restructuring programme.
Return to Profitability
The restructuring comes after Posta recorded a KSh488 million profit for the financial year ending June 2025, marking a significant turnaround from the KSh1.08 billion loss reported the previous year.
The corporation says the reforms are part of broader efforts to modernise operations and remain competitive in the rapidly changing communications and logistics sector.
