Peter Ndegwa, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Safaricom, has officially assumed the role of Chancellor at Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST). Ndegwa replaces Dr. James Macharia, CEO of Equity, to become the university’s second chancellor.
Dr. Macharia’s tenure ended on July 20, 2023.
Ndegwa’s appointment came following President Ruto’s nomination in November 2023.
President William Ruto, in a gazette notice, announced Ndegwa’s appointment, stating that he would assume the position effective November 1, 2023, for a five-year term.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 38 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint– Peter Ndegwa Waititu to be the Chancellor of the Meru University of Science and Technology, for a period of five (5) years, with effect from the 1st November 2023,” the notice read.
After the inauguration ceremony, Ndegwa took to the social media platform X to express his excitement about his new position. He emphasized his dedication to advancing the university’s mission.
“It’s truly a privilege to take on this role, and I am humbled by the responsibility entrusted to me by the university. As I embark on this new journey, I am filled with a sense of purpose and dedication to advancing the mission of Meru University of Science and Technology,” he stated. “Together, let us continue to strive for excellence, embrace innovation, and empower the next generation of leaders and change-makers.”
