Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has stepped forward to defend the embattled Azimio principals facing potential arrest and prosecution over corruption allegations.
Speaking in Mumias, Kakamega County on Sunday, Kalonzo offered his support to former governors Mwangi wa Iria of Murang’a and Wycliffe Oparanya of Kakamega, who have been implicated in corruption cases following recommendations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
Kalonzo’s defense came amidst growing pressure on Azimio leaders, particularly as Raila Odinga shifts his focus towards his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson position, leaving some to speculate about the state of active local opposition politics.
On Saturday 13 April , Mwangi wa Iria faced accusations of conflict of interest related to a Ksh140 million publicity tender awarded during his tenure as Murang’a Governor. Kalonzo criticized the government for seemingly targeting opposition figures through the use of investigative bodies, suggesting a political agenda behind the actions.
Expressing his dismay, Kalonzo questioned the selective prosecution, highlighting the presence of individuals with criminal cases within the current administration. He found it perplexing to witness Mwangi wa Iria facing prosecution while others with similar allegations remain in government roles.
Moreover, Kalonzo pointed out the government’s tactics of publicly shaming opposition leaders, recalling the incident where Oparanya was arrested alongside his wife. These remarks underscored Kalonzo’s concerns about what he perceives as political targeting and the need for impartiality in the application of justice.
