Kanye West Opens Up About Ongoing Struggle with Suicidal Thoughts Since His Mother’s Death
Acclaimed rapper and producer Kanye West has revealed that he has battled suicidal thoughts regularly since the death of his mother, Donda West, in 2007.
In a recent series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), West shared that he blames himself and his success for his mother’s decision to undergo cosmetic surgery, which ultimately led to her untimely passing at 58 years old.
“I thought about killing myself at least once a month ever since my mama was killed in her surgery. I always blamed myself,” West wrote. “I felt like if I never ‘made it’ my mom would still be alive.”
Donda West underwent liposuction, a tummy tuck, and a breast reduction before complications led to her tragic passing.
West further revealed that the past five weeks have been the first time he hasn’t felt suicidal. “People ask if I’m okay,” he posted. “[These] past five weeks have been the first time I haven’t wanted to kill myself.”
The rapper has long been open about his grief, even naming his 2021 album Donda in her honor. His struggles with mental health have been widely discussed, especially following his controversial statements and erratic public behavior.
West, who was previously diagnosed with bipolar disorder, stated late last year that he was “misdiagnosed” and now identifies as autistic.
