Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, Starlink, has officially launched in Somalia, marking a major step toward expanding connectivity in the Horn of Africa. Musk made the announcement on Sunday via social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Somalia’s government confirmed the news, with Mustafa Yasiin, Director of Communication at the Ministry of Telecommunications, revealing that the company has now been granted an operating license after more than two years of discussions.
“We have been in talks with Starlink for two and a half years. We officially granted them the license today,” Yasiin said in a video shared on the state news agency SONNA’s Facebook page.
He expressed optimism about the rollout, saying, “We hope Starlink will boost the quality of internet services across Somalia and extend connectivity to more remote and underserved regions.”
Starlink’s arrival is expected to be a game-changer for Somalia’s digital infrastructure, offering high-speed internet via satellite in areas where traditional broadband has struggled to reach.
