Two police officers in Nyeri County have been arrested after they were found in possession of two kilograms of bhang they had confiscated and secretly kept without reporting the seizure.
According to police authorities, the two were apprehended following bribery claims linked to an incident on April 15, where a woman alleged the officers demanded a bribe in exchange for her release after they found the narcotics in her possession.
The woman claimed she was forced to pay Sh100,000 for her freedom — but despite receiving the money, the officers neither booked the drugs at the station nor filed any official report about the incident, raising questions about their motives.
Frustrated by the officers’ actions, the woman approached a local politician with the story.
In response, the politician mobilized a protest to condemn the incident and demand accountability.
Upon learning about the planned demonstrations, local police commanders launched an immediate investigation.
A search was conducted at the officers’ houses at Muthinga Police Post in Tetu, where a bag containing a substance suspected to be bhang — approximately two kilograms — was recovered from the female officer’s house.
Further investigations revealed the male officer had received the bribe money from the suspect to secure her release.
Neither the incident nor the recovery of the drugs had been recorded in the official Occurrence Book, and the station commander had not been informed, which police officials have termed a serious breach of procedure.
Embarassed police authorities described the incident as an isolated case and confirmed that a probe is underway to uncover further details surrounding the matter.
