Investigators have made a major breakthrough in the murder case of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were following the recovery of the firearm used in the assassination.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja announced on Thursday that a ballistics report has definitively linked a pistol recovered from suspects to the bullets that killed the MP on April 30.
“The ballistics report we received unequivocally links the Sarsilmaz pistol recovered from the residence of one of the suspects to the fatal shots that took his life,” Kanja told reporters.
The firearm was among items recovered from two suspects, who were found in possession of two pistols — a Retay Falcon and a Sarsilmaz — along with a bag and shoes matching the description of those worn by one of the individuals seen at the crime scene.
In addition to being the murder weapon, the Sarsilmaz pistol has also been tied to three robbery cases in Nairobi and Kiambu counties.
A post-mortem conducted on May 2 at the Lee Funeral Home by Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor revealed that MP Were sustained five gunshot wounds, all entering from the left side of his body. Two bullets were retrieved during the autopsy, while a third was found inside the late MP’s vehicle. All three were submitted for forensic analysis, which confirmed the match.
Investigations into the killing remain ongoing, with authorities pursuing further leads connected to the suspects and potential accomplices.
