Philip Aroko, a prime suspect in the shocking murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were, has been released on a cash bail of KSh300,000, sparking public debate and renewed interest in the high-profile case.
Aroko, a politician and known rival of the slain MP during the 2022 general election, was arrested and arraigned at the JKIA Law Courts where the prosecution initially sought to have him detained for 30 days to allow police to complete investigations.
But Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi granted authorities only seven days. Upon the case’s return to court on Friday, she ruled that Aroko be released on bail — under strict conditions.
As part of his release terms, Aroko must surrender his passport and is banned from traveling to Homa Bay County, where the late MP was buried. The court also prohibited him from contacting the MP’s family, co-suspects, or any individuals linked to the ongoing murder investigation.
In an unexpected courtroom moment earlier in the week, Aroko’s lawyer Danstan Omari told the court his client wished to be released so he could “pray at the grave” of the slain MP — a request the magistrate firmly denied, reiterating the travel ban to Homa Bay.
The court further instructed Aroko not to interfere with any evidence or witness in the case. He is required to report regularly to investigators and cooperate fully in the ongoing probe.
Prosecutors had argued against his release, citing the serious nature of the allegations and the high public interest. Aroko is among 11 suspects under investigation in connection with the brutal killing of MP Charles Were.
The case is set for mention on June 3, 2025, when further directions will be given.
