The Kenya Meteorological Department has confirmed that the earth tremors felt in Nairobi and surrounding areas on Wednesday, May 7, were caused by a regional earthquake.

In a public statement, the department revealed that the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.5 and was centered near Longido, a town in northern Tanzania close to the Kenya-Tanzania border. The quake struck at around 10:35 AM (EAT) at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

“Tremors felt in Nairobi this morning were due to a regional earthquake: M 4.5 – 81 km WNW of Longido, Tanzania, Time: 07 May 2025, 10:35 AM (EAT), Location: 2.574°S, 35.983°E, Depth: 10.0 km, Intensity: III (Felt),” the statement read.

The tremor was felt in several parts of Nairobi, including Westlands, Parklands, Kangemi, Mlolongo, Kiambu Road, and along Mombasa Road. Reports from Earthquake Monitor also indicated that the initial ground shaking was experienced in Kajiado before it spread to nearby regions.

While the tremor caused concern among residents, no damage or injuries have been reported. The Earthquake Monitor added that more precise seismic data is expected to be released after verification.
