Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has strongly condemned the government’s decision to withdraw his official security detail, calling the move an affront to democracy and an attempt to silence elected leaders who stand with the people.

Taking to his official social media accounts, Babu said:

“This is not just an attack on me, but on democracy itself.”

He attributed the move to his active participation in the June 25, 2025 memorial protests, which marked the first anniversary of the Occupy Parliament movement that rocked Kenya in June 2024.

Babu marched with demonstrators in Nairobi during the nationwide protests, honoring those who died last year and calling for government accountability, justice, and reforms.

“I walked with the people because I believe in justice for the fallen and accountability for their killers. The security withdrawal will not stop me,” he said in a separate post.

The move comes amid heightened political tension following the deaths of at least 16 people during the recent protests, as reported by Amnesty Kenya and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR).
