NAIROBI, KENYA, JUNE 30, 2025 – Kenyan rapper Dyana Cods has issued a public apology after sparking online outrage by expressing support for President William Ruto on her Instagram Stories — a move that drew swift backlash, especially from Gen Z followers.
The fast-rising rapper found herself at the centre of online controversy after declaring, “I love my president,” in a now-deleted post, adding that “a country with bad governance is better than one with no governance” and that “you can’t change the current leaders but you can change the coming generation of leaders.”
The post quickly went viral, catching the attention of Kenyan actress and political commentator Wanjiku Stephens, who reposted the story and encouraged fans to stop supporting Dyana Cods’ music.

Threats, DMs and a Change of Tune
Dyana Cods reportedly sent direct messages (DMs) to Stephens, demanding the posts be taken down and even threatening legal action. However, the posts remained public, and the criticism intensified.
Facing growing backlash from Gen Z fans, many of whom played a key role in recent Gen Z protests in Kenya, the rapper returned to Instagram to plead for forgiveness.
In a follow-up post, she claimed her original comment was a sarcastic joke and the result of a dare.
“I was dared to post that for 24 hours but due to public outrage nimewachana na io mchezo…. It was a sarcasm post towards the government. I stand with the people,” she wrote.
She concluded with a humble note:
“Sorry to the people I offended.”
Social Media Reacts to Dyana’s Climbdown
Her apology has since sparked mixed reactions online, with some netizens expressing scepticism about her explanation, while others commended her for acknowledging her mistake.
