The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved terrorism-related charges against 37 suspects arraigned at Kahawa Law Courts on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
The charges stem from coordinated attacks that took place on June 25, 2025, in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, and Matuu, Machakos County, during anti-government protests that turned violent.
According to the prosecution, 25 individuals are believed to have participated in a series of attacks in Kikuyu between 12 pm and 11 pm, targeting key government facilities.
The list of vandalized and torched buildings includes:
- Kikuyu Law Courts
- Subcounty Commissioner’s Office
- Office of the Registrar of Persons
- Kikuyu Police Station
- Subcounty Accountant’s Office
- Registrar of Lands Office
- Chief’s Office
- Subcounty Education Office
- Kikuyu Probation Office
The accused face charges under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, along with counts of arson and, in the alternative, malicious damage to property.
The remaining 10 suspects were arrested over a separate attack in Matuu, which saw the destruction of police vehicles and the assault of officers stationed at Matuu Police Station.
Prosecutors told the court that all suspects were lawfully arrested and duly served with their charge sheets, dismissing claims of foul play or unlawful detention.
“There is no malice in prosecuting the suspects. The charges reflect the gravity of the acts committed,” prosecutors told the court.
The arraignment comes amid heightened security concerns following widespread unrest and vandalism during the June 25 protests across the country.
The suspects are expected to enter pleas in upcoming sessions as the court processes evidence from police investigators and government auditors assessing property losses.
