A multi-agency security team, led by officers from Obama Police Station in Kayole, conducted a night raid on Thursday targeting illegal alcohol brewing operations in the Mwengenye area, near Dandora Bridge along the Nairobi River.
The crackdown resulted in the destruction of more than 100 litres of kangara, a locally brewed illicit alcohol. Authorities also seized several 20-litre jerricans commonly used in kangara production.
“This is part of an ongoing operation to eliminate illegal brews in Nairobi’s residential areas,” said a senior police officer at the scene.
Police Investigations Underway
Police say they have now launched a manhunt for the suspected brewers, who fled the scene during the raid. Officers are also working with local administrators and informants to identify those behind the underground trade.
What Is Kangara?
Kangara is a homemade, unregulated alcoholic drink, often brewed under unsanitary conditions using sugar, maize flour, yeast, and other additives. Health officials warn it can be toxic and even lethal, especially when contaminated with methanol or other chemicals.
According to Kenya’s NACADA, illicit alcohol remains a major public health threat in informal settlements, often linked to crime, domestic violence, and youth addiction.
Community Demands Sustainable Solutions
While locals have welcomed the crackdown, some are urging the Nairobi County Government to provide economic alternatives for unemployed youth who turn to illicit brewing for survival.
“We need jobs and proper rehabilitation programs, not just destruction of brews,” said a Mwengenye resident.
