A Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) ranger, identified as Victor Kibet Cherugut, has died by suicide in a tragic incident that occurred in Muringene, Meru County.
According to police reports, Cherugut’s body was discovered on the morning of Wednesday, July 2, hanging from a tree just outside his residence at the local staff quarters. A sisal rope was found tied around his neck.
Authorities stated that the motive behind the incident remains unclear. His body has since been transferred to a nearby mortuary, awaiting autopsy and further investigations.
“The matter is under investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the incident,” said a senior officer at the Meru Police Station.
The death of Ranger Cherugut has once again cast a spotlight on the growing mental health crisis within Kenya’s disciplined forces. Officers in Kenya Wildlife Service, like their counterparts in the police and military, are often exposed to high-pressure environments, isolation, and emotional strain — all factors that contribute to mental distress.
Recent reports have highlighted multiple cases of depression-related suicides within security agencies, prompting calls for urgent mental health intervention and support programs.
Police say investigations are ongoing and urge anyone with information that may assist in the case to come forward.
