 Ruiru, Kiambu County

Police in Kiambu County have launched an investigation after a businessman reported the mysterious loss of his licensed Glock pistol from his car while in the Membley area of Ruiru.

According to a report filed by the victim, identified as John Kariuki, he is a licensed civilian firearm holder who left his house on Friday morning with the weapon securely locked in his vehicle’s glove box. The pistol was loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition.

Weapon Vanished Without a Trace

Kariuki told police that he only realized the gun was missing the following day, Saturday, upon returning home from work. Upon inspection, he found the glove box open and the firearm gone.

Police officers from Ruiru Police Station visited the scene and have since launched an investigation into the disappearance. Detectives are also analyzing whether the vehicle was tampered with or if it was targeted specifically for the weapon.

“We are treating this matter with urgency due to the potential security threat posed by such a weapon falling into the wrong hands,” a senior officer said.

Concerns Over Licensed Firearm Holders

This incident comes amid increased calls for vigilance among Kenya’s more than 15,000 licensed firearm holders. Authorities have repeatedly warned that such weapons, once stolen, are often used to commit serious crimes, including robbery and murder.

In fact, as reported by The Nation, some firearm owners have previously been charged in court for failing to properly secure their weapons, a violation of the Firearms Act Cap. 114 of the Laws of Kenya.

Police Caution and Next Steps

Police are urging all licensed firearm holders to adhere strictly to safety protocols, including the use of biometric safes and secure transport cases. Lapses in security can have grave national consequences, especially with increased crime rates in urban neighborhoods.
