Missing blogger Ndiangui Kinyangia, who vanished more than a week ago under mysterious circumstances, has finally reappeared in public — escorted by lawyers and family — as he presented himself in court on Thursday, July 4, 2025.
Kinyangia, who was reported missing last week, walked into the courtroom in Nairobi alongside lawyer Kibe Mungai and Senior Counsel Martha Karua, where he was met by an emotional reunion with his mother, who broke down in tears as she embraced him.
His reappearance follows a directive issued by Justice Chacha Mwita on Tuesday, instructing authorities to produce the blogger dead or alive, amid rising public concern over a possible abduction.
According to family lawyer Wahome Thuku, Kinyangia contacted his relatives late Tuesday evening, confirming that he was alive, safe, and in hiding due to fears for his life.
“Mr. Ndiangui indicated to the family member that he had hidden temporarily for fear of his life upon learning that DCI officers were looking for him over unknown criminal allegations,” said Wahome Thuku
The blogger reportedly went into hiding after learning that officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were allegedly searching for him in connection with unspecified allegations.
He expressed willingness to cooperate with authorities and appear before the DCI, but only under conditions where his safety and legal rights would be guaranteed.
“He is ready to present himself and respond to any queries, but fears for his safety,” Thuku added.
Kinyangia’s disappearance had sparked widespread concern across social media platforms, especially from civil society groups and digital rights activists, who decried what they termed as a growing trend of enforced disappearances targeting outspoken Kenyans.
Kinyangia’s legal team is now pushing for assurances from the court and state agencies that he will not be unlawfully detained or harmed. Meanwhile, the court is expected to issue further directions on the blogger’s anticipated appearance before the DCI.
