Nairobi, Kenya
Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been released from prison after the High Court granted him bail, nearly six months into his 12-year sentence linked to a KSh588 million corruption scandal.
High Court Grants Bail in Waititu Graft Case
The court approved Waititu’s release on a KSh53 million bond, pending the outcome of his appeal against both his conviction and sentencing.
In March 2025, Waititu had been found guilty of conflict of interest and misappropriation of public funds, leading to his sentencing:
- 12 years imprisonment or
- A fine of KSh52.5 million
Waititu was accused of improperly awarding tenders during his tenure as governor, leading to irregular disbursement of millions in taxpayer funds.

Political Fallout and Ban from Office
Besides the custodial sentence, the court barred Waititu from holding or vying for public office for seven years, citing ethical concerns and the need for public accountability in leadership.
This ban is in line with Chapter Six of Kenya’s Constitution, which outlines leadership and integrity standards. Read more on Kenya Law – Leadership and Integrity Act.

Wife Susan Ndung’u Also Convicted
Waititu’s wife, Susan Ndung’u, was also implicated in the case. She was sentenced to one year in jail or pay an alternative fine of KSh500,000, after being found guilty of involvement in the corrupt dealings that led to the loss of public funds.
Their case had been cited as a textbook example of family involvement in graft, raising broader questions about ethical standards among public officials and their close associates.
Background of the Waititu Case
Ferdinand Waititu served as Governor of Kiambu County from 2017 until his impeachment in 2020, following multiple corruption allegations.
The KSh588 million scandal revolved around irregular tender awards and misuse of funds during his administration. The case was prosecuted by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and investigated by the EACC.

Public Reaction and Next Steps
Waititu’s release has triggered mixed reactions across the country, with activists and transparency watchdogs warning against what they term as “elite escape routes” from accountability.
However, his legal team maintains that the appeal will expose flaws in the initial conviction and offer him a chance at redemption.
As the appeal process begins, Waititu remains a controversial figure in Kenyan politics. For past reports on his political history and impeachment, visit:
