Man Dies in Heated Land Conflict
Kevin Okinyi, a resident of Dede in Migori County, died after being stabbed in the abdomen by a relative during a confrontation believed to have stemmed from an ongoing land dispute.
According to police reports, Okinyi allegedly stormed the home of the assailant armed with a panga (machete) and attacked the man and his wife, inflicting serious head injuries on both. In what the assailant claimed was an act of self-defense, he and his wife fought back and fatally stabbed Okinyi.
The injured couple was rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment under police watch. Authorities said that the altercation was the culmination of long-standing tensions over land ownership between the families.
Police Investigate as Tensions Rise
Police from the Awendo sub-county confirmed that the incident is being treated as a homicide. Investigation into the events leading to the fatal encounter continue.
The body of the deceased has been moved to the Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary pending a full autopsy. The investigation will determine whether the act qualifies as self-defense or manslaughter.
