Busia, Kenya– Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has expressed his willingness to collaborate with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ahead of the 2027 general elections — but only under a strict ideological condition.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Omtatah, who has already declared his interest in running for president in 2027, emphasized that any political collaboration must be based on a shared vision — specifically one that seeks to dismantle the executive presidency and advance civic republicanism in Kenya.
Omtatah: “No to Tribal Politics”
“I would work with him (Gachagua). Why not? But it will be on the question of the ideological framework,” Omtatah stated.
“If it’s a policy framework that begins with dismantling the executive presidency, I will support anybody who helps us achieve the emancipation of Kenyans. If we have a clear policy agreement — not an agreement of tribes — that I cannot be part of.”
Omtatah’s remarks come at a time when opposition forces are actively scouting for potential alliances and partners to present a formidable challenge to President William Ruto in the next election.
Gachagua’s Role in the United Opposition
Currently, Rigathi Gachagua is among the key conveners of the United Opposition, a coalition of political heavyweights including former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, former Defence CS Eugene Wamalwa, and Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua.
Gachagua is reportedly on a month-long political and economic tour in the United States, engaging with diaspora leaders and think tanks in Washington, D.C., and New York — a move viewed by political analysts as a strategic positioning ahead of the elections.
Omtatah Critiques Opposition’s Ideological Vacuum
While open to alliances, Senator Omtatah criticized the United Opposition for lacking a strong policy platform.
“I have not seen an ideology match from the Opposition camp. Even President Ruto has challenged the united opposition to show its policy. So far, all I’ve heard is the slogan ‘One term and Ruto must go’ — nothing about solutions,” he said.
Omtatah, known for his legal activism and strong stand on constitutional governance, reiterated his resolve to be on the 2027 ballot — even if he has to run as a lone ranger.
