Kiambu County, Kenya
Police have launched a manhunt for two suspects accused of stealing CCTV cameras from the rural home of National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwah in Mahi-Hii, Kikuyu, Kiambu County. The incident reportedly took place on July 31, with the theft discovered on August 5, according to police sources.
Incident Discovered by Officers on Patrol
Security officers assigned to the politician’s heavily guarded residence were the first to notice the CCTV cameras were missing. Upon inquiry, they contacted an electrician in charge of maintaining the surveillance system. While the technician denied involvement in the theft, he was able to retrieve surveillance footage showing the sequence of events leading to the incident.
The footage captured two unidentified men approaching the cameras before walking away. Moments later, they returned—one climbing with the help of the other to detach the two CCTV units, reportedly worth Ksh 30,000, and destroy a third.
DCI Launches Investigation
Detectives from Karai Police Station and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), including forensic experts from the Acoustics and Imaging Unit at DCI Headquarters, visited the scene to collect evidence and assess the damage.
Authorities believe the motive may have been a typical burglary rather than a politically motivated attack. However, the fact that Ichungwah’s home was previously targeted during the June 25, 2024 Gen Z protests—which were triggered by the controversial Finance Bill he supported—has left room for speculation.
His residence, already under heavy police surveillance, had faced similar threats last year, although officers managed to repel the attackers at the time.
Political Relevance and Recent Targeting
Kimani Ichungwah has been a vocal supporter of President William Ruto’s government and played a key role in the controversial passage of the Finance Bill 2024 that sparked nationwide demonstrations.

Police continue to treat the case as a priority due to Ichungwah’s profile, and efforts are underway to identify and arrest the suspects caught on camera.
Ichungwah Yet to Comment
The lawmaker has not released a public statement about the theft. However, his aides expressed hope that law enforcement agencies will swiftly apprehend the culprits.
