Starlink Kenya Loses Over 10% of Subscribers in Three Months

Nairobi, Kenya — Elon Musk’s Starlink is facing turbulence in Kenya, shedding more than 10% of its subscribers in the first quarter of 2025.

Launched in Kenya in 2023 with the promise of space-powered, high-speed internet, Starlink quickly attracted early adopters, particularly during last year’s anti-government protests, when many hoped its satellite service would remain stable amid internet disruptions.

However, the excitement appears to be fading fast — especially among urban customers.

Why Urban Kenyans Are Dropping Starlink

While Starlink promised speeds of 25–220 Mbps, a May 2025 Ookla report shows Kenya’s median Starlink speed at just 47 Mbps — far below what many users consider “fast internet.”

The high hardware cost, expensive monthly subscription fees, and lack of local customer support have further soured the experience for city dwellers.

Users report that resolving technical issues such as faulty dishes or slow speeds often involves slow, online-only support channels, leaving many frustrated.

Competition From Local ISPs

As Starlink numbers dropped by over 2,000 users, the Communications Authority of Kenya reported an 8% growth in fixed internet subscriptions from local providers during the same period.

Urban users are switching back to cheaper and faster fiber and mobile-based internet solutions offered by Kenyan ISPs.

Rural Areas Still a Lifeline for Starlink

Despite the urban exodus, Starlink’s satellite-based model remains attractive for remote and underserved regions where fiber and mobile network coverage is unreliable.

With about 17,000 subscribers still in Kenya and over 6 million globally, analysts say Starlink’s future in the country hinges on whether it can pivot to rural connectivity, where it offers a unique advantage.

For now, the dream of Starlink revolutionizing urban internet access in Kenya may have already come and gone — unless the company rethinks its pricing, service quality, and customer support.
