Nairobi, Kenya— A driver of MOOD, a flashy Nairobi matatu linked to George Ruto, the son of President William Ruto, has been caught on video handing a routine bribe to a traffic police officer — reigniting concerns over rampant corruption in Kenya’s public transport sector.
In the widely shared clip, the matatu is seen slowing down before the driver casually passes cash to a uniformed traffic officer, who quickly waves the vehicle through without hesitation. The MOOD matatu, known for its vibrant graffiti and booming sound system, is a familiar sight in the city’s streets.

Such incidents are far from rare. According to Transparency International, bribery between matatu operators and traffic officers remains a persistent problem in Kenya’s urban centres. Drivers often pay between KSh 50 and KSh 100 daily to evade penalties for offences. Such
as overloading, overlapping, operating without valid documentation, or flouting route regulations.
This cycle of petty corruption allows rogue operators to keep breaking traffic laws, endangering passengers and other road users. For years, stakeholders have called for stricter enforcement of anti-bribery laws and digital systems to reduce human interaction between drivers and police officers.
Public Outrage and Calls for Accountability
The video of the President’s son’s matatu has sparked public outrage on social media platforms, with Kenyans calling for accountability not only from the driver but also from the traffic police involved.
While President Ruto has in the past spoken against graft, critics argue that without visible action in such high-profile cases, anti-corruption pledges remain hollow.
Internal investigations into the traffic officer’s conduct are yet to be confirmed, and the National Police Service has not issued an official statement.
