The body of Corporal Kennedy Mutuku Nzuve, a Kenyan police officer who died while serving in the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) in Haiti, will be repatriated to Nairobi on Friday, September 26, 2025.
The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the repatriation, revealing that the 41-year-old officer, attached to the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU), died in a road accident during a peacekeeping operation on August 31, 2025.
According to reports, Corporal Nzuve was involved in a crash along the Kenscoff-Petion-Ville road at Perlerin 9 and later succumbed to his injuries at Lambert Sante Hospital.
“NPS remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Kenyans, residents, visitors, and their property. Furthermore, we are dedicated to achieving the mandate of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti in full compliance with international law,” the NPS said in a statement.
Confusion Over Officer Kabiru’s Death
The announcement comes as questions continue to swirl around the fate of Officer Benedict Kabiru, who reportedly went missing in Haiti in March 2025.
On Tuesday, during a United Nations Council meeting, President William Ruto announced Kabiru’s death, stating he was among three Kenyan officers killed while on duty in Haiti.
However, Kabiru’s family moved to court, claiming they had not been officially informed. The Attorney General’s Office later told the court it had no confirmation of his death, saying a search was still ongoing.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, speaking in Garissa during the 46th Jukwaa la Usalama Security Baraza, defended the delay, attributing it to the “synchronisation of relaying information from security agencies in Haiti to Kenyan authorities.”
NPS has since acknowledged that a missing officer was confirmed dead following an ambush, though his name was not disclosed in Thursday’s statement.
MSS-Haiti on Peacekeeper Safety
The MSS-Haiti mission confirmed that several peacekeepers were injured in the August 31 accident that claimed Corporal Nzuve’s life, but assured the public that those wounded were out of danger.
Kenya continues to lead the multinational peacekeeping mission in Haiti despite rising security risks and controversy surrounding the handling of officer casualties.
