Tragedy struck on the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway after a St. Mary’s Elementaita ambulance was involved in a fatal night crash near Kimende, claiming the lives of all six people on board.
Victims of the Crash
According to police reports, the victims included:
- A patient under transfer
- Her husband
- Two relatives
- A nurse
- The driver
They were on an emergency transfer when the vehicle lost control at a notorious black spot near Kimende, highlighting once again the dangers that plague one of Kenya’s busiest highways.
Highway of Death
The Nakuru–Nairobi route, part of the Northern Corridor, records some of the highest accident rates in Kenya. Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) shows that black spots such as Kinungi, Gilgil, and Kimende continue to be high-risk zones.
Experts attribute the repeated accidents to speeding, poor road design, reckless overtaking, and heavy commercial traffic.
Calls for Road Safety Measures
The tragic ambulance crash has renewed calls for enhanced safety interventions along the Northern Corridor, including better road signage, speed enforcement, and redesign of hazardous sections.
Authorities have urged drivers, especially those in emergency and commercial transport, to exercise extreme caution when using the highway.
