Investigations are underway after a man died while in police custody at the Komwamu Police Post in Isebania, Migori County.

According to police reports, the suspect, identified as Allan Kamau Kimani, 41, was discovered on Friday evening hanging from a window grill inside the holding cell, with a shirt tied around his neck.

Arrest and Detention

Kimani had been arrested earlier in the day following a complaint from a relative over malicious damage to property. He was being held alone in the cell awaiting transfer to Isebania Police Station when the incident occurred.

Police Account

Police claim Kimani used his shirt to take his own life. The motive behind the incident remains unclear. Senior officers who visited the scene confirmed the events and reported the case to relevant oversight bodies.

IPOA Investigation

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the death, describing it as part of a worrying trend. This is the third such case in September, following similar custodial deaths in Mombasa and Kitale, all of which are currently under review.

Broader Concern

Deaths in police custody have repeatedly raised questions about human rights compliance, conditions in detention facilities, and accountability within security agencies. IPOA has assured the public that a full inquiry will be conducted.
