Shock gripped Samia village in Busia County after a 69-year-old man was lynched by an angry mob moments after allegedly killing his 89-year-old mother.
The deceased woman has been identified as Rosalia Auma Obonyo, while her son, who was later lynched, was identified as Ernest Mudivo.
According to police reports, locals discovered the elderly woman’s lifeless body outside her house on Monday and immediately mobilized to pursue Mudivo, who was suspected of killing her.
He was cornered and stoned to death just a few meters from where his mother’s body lay.
Authorities said the motive behind the brutal murder remains unclear, and both bodies were moved to the morgue for autopsy and further investigations.
Police have condemned the mob justice, urging residents to report suspects to the authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands.
“Mob lynching undermines justice. We urge locals to surrender suspects for lawful processing and prosecution,” said a senior police officer from Busia.
Cases of mob lynching have been on the rise in several parts of Kenya, despite ongoing efforts by law enforcement and human rights groups to curb the trend.
