Narok County, Kenya – The death toll from a cholera outbreak in Trans Mara, Narok County, has risen to five, with at least 45 others hospitalized as health authorities intensify efforts to contain the spread of the deadly disease.
According to county health officials, the situation remains critical, with doctors and nurses at Trans Mara West Hospital working around the clock to manage a continuous flow of patients suffering from severe dehydration and shock.
Emergency Measures Imposed
In a swift response to the outbreak, the Narok County government has ordered the closure of all eateries and banned the sale of food in open-air markets across the region to prevent further infections.
County health officials confirmed that water samples from affected areas have been dispatched to government chemists in Kisumu for analysis to determine the contamination source.
“We are taking all necessary precautions, including intensified surveillance and public health education, to ensure this outbreak is contained quickly,” said a senior county health officer.
Health Workers on High Alert
Hospitals in the region have been placed on high alert, with emergency response teams deployed to disinfect contaminated water sources and educate residents on proper hygiene practices.
Residents have been urged to boil or treat drinking water, avoid eating uncooked food, and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, or fatigue.
The Ministry of Health is expected to dispatch additional medical supplies and personnel to the area to reinforce the county’s response.
